DIY Kit
One such idea is the DIY kits from Le Swine. Traditionally a food van business serving private occasions, corporate events and festivals, with all this put on hold there was another thing that could be done. The DIY kit consisted of all the deconstructed components and ingredients sent direct to the customer, with everything required in the box, for the customer themselves to cook. A brilliant and unique idea.
As a London based food photographer, I contacted the proprietor James, and we collaborated for me to do a product shoot.
I went along to the Le Swine headquarters and picked up a couple of the DIY kits and went to work.
James let me know the style he liked and would be looking for in final images – that and inside the DIY kit was a fun booklet for the customers on how to cook the perfect bacon butty.
As a food photographer, I try and do a few things during the shoot to maximise my time on the set and the value to a potential customer.
I set up the studio gear in my home kitchen for food photography, that is, studio strobes, speed lights, reflectors, the usual stuff, plus some constant lights for video and a separate camera in the corner doing a time-lapse for some Behind The Scenes (BTS) interest.
Break out the fry pan, chopping board, a selection of fine knives (ok, the ones in my block, which are mainly blunt), and opened the DIY box for the first time.
I filmed opening the box, for a small promo video I wanted to produce, and removed the premium ingredients (wait – is this my official first ‘Unboxing’ video?).
The challenge with both video and stills when photographing food and without any assistance is juggling the sequence of what is used for food video footage and what is used for stills for the client or for food product portfolio.
After a full days shooting still and the next day for some more motion shots we got what we wanted.
Then we got to eat!
